| With
every passing year, the state of the art and its
application against society is increasing in quantum leaps.
Every time we turn around there is a new "non-lethal
weapon" or a new suspension of civil liberties,
thousands more surveillance cameras aimed - not at
terrorists - but at everyday Americans.
We are racing toward our own oblivion as if we were in
freefall, and taking humankind down with us.
All of the seemingly unconnected events that began with
a trickle a century ago are all coming together in a made
rush, like some kind of out-of-control critical mass. We
brace ourselves for the megaton explosions we sense will
come at any moment, without warning and without mercy.
As a journalist, I see it coming at us so fast we can no
longer keep up with it. The headlines race by in a blur,
like the road signs going by in a blur as we sit helpless
in a speeding, out of control car.
But it is far from "out of control." It is
very much control - but in control of an evil so dark we
cannot bear to look at it.
